With winter/snow tires, will the Audi R8 be ok in a little snow/slush since it has AWD? I know it sits real low but if snow has been salted or recently plowed I imagine it can handle and brake fine as long as snow tires are on? Any reply is appreciated. Quentin R. January 18, 2015 - 09:22
I absolutely love my A8 4.2 Quattro, bloody awesome, it's like driving a Porsche. It accelerates like a rocket， stops on a dime, can be pushed to the bend like a 911. It's quattro system has been described as best of 4wd. I just wonder why their 4wd is better, since Bimmer and Mercedes has 4wd offering too. I was told that Audi deliberately place their longitude engines more up front to allow them to build a better 4wd and because the weight distribution is more heavy up front, Audi will not oversteer in snow and more controllable. is that the real reason that Quattro is better March 12, 2015 - 17:07
The torsen system is permanent, but can distribute power between axels depending on traction. I haven't seen any tests indicating superiority of one system over the other, and Audi has moved their engine towards the rear of the engine compartment on more recent models as the old cars are infamous for their tendency to under-steer. The torsen system requires the engine to be mounted longitudinally, and the system requires more space than systems used by e.g. Ford (Sierra Cosworth) or BMW.With modern ESP systems even my rear wheel drive 3-series feels safe on snowy roads. Recent Audis and BMW distribute power 60/40 (rear/front), this seems to be the preferred set-up for cars to handle well and balanced. December 24, 2012 - 17:01

Will it be possible for me to use an Audi A4 quattro 2,5 V6 diesel engine and tiptronic gearbox in the mid engined car that I am building? I am concerned about the rear drive not being connected to anything. I will obviously remove the propshaft. Will everything work with the rear propshaft removed? June 16, 2012 - 23:01

Absolutely. I'm not too familiar with what kind of center diff it has, and CBF to look it up in this wiki, but if you weld the center diff (a common mod to do to the rear diff for drift cars) then it will work just fine. The welded diff makes it so the front and rear outputs always spin at the same rate, meaning it will work for your purposes. June 16, 2012 - 21:01

I have a 01 audi a6 4.2 and the car starts normal but when you put it in d or R or any others gears the car does not move at all ... if i press the gas above 1000 rpm while in D the car goes in limp mode sometimes it tries to move like a step and something locks it up.... even if i lift the car up i can try to drive it on the air with only 3 wheels spining but it does not have a lot of power.....if someone could help i would really appreciate, and also when i used the vag com it said TC OPEN... please help January 25, 2012 - 01:06
It is absolutely unbelievable, but Audi themselves state on their web site that Audi A3 has quattro® permanent all-wheel drive system utilizing Haldex center differential. December 23, 2013 - 16:38
It isn't lame. The Haldex is a clutch-pack, but acts like a differential to some degree. It is permanent and full-time. With Haldex 4, the torque split on the S and RS models is about 70/30 but changes constantly based on gas pedal actuation, wheel slip, wheel speed, and more. When slip is present the car can be rear biased, but and can do a max of 50/50 torque dist. when NO slip is present. Not a bad system at all. December 23, 2013 - 18:32

No one said it was a differential. The terminology was "acts like" a diff. It is positioned between the axles and plays the same role: to direct torque as needed. Gen 4 and 5 Haldex can lock the clutch pack preemptively for a 50/50 split (meaning it acts like a diff here with a fixed distribution when it needs to), additional torque is then directed to whatever axle has more grip in slip conditions, meaning it can be rear biased on slip -- this is identical to what Torsen with a 50/50 static layout does with slip present, only that Torsen always runs at 50/50 until slip is detected, which is not really optimal, as you don't need 50/50 when driving straight at a constant speed.
