super select II all wheel drive system

Mitsubishi's Super Select II all wheel drive system featuring:

  • 2H mode - Rear wheel drive. Vacuum-disconnected front axle (the front driveshaft is disconnected from the transfer case; a free wheel mechanism disconnects the right wheel, left left and right front driveshafts are freewheeling).
  • 4H mode - Permanent all wheel drive, 33%/67% torque distribution front/rear in normal conditions, up to 100% to either axle if slippage occurs (via center differential with viscous coupling). Switching from 2H to 4H is allowed at speeds up to 100 kph (65 mph). From 4H to 2H at any speed.
  • 4HLc mode - Permanent all wheel drive, fixed 50/50 torque distribution (via locked center differential) in normal conditions. Shifting from 4H to 4HLc is allowed at speeds up to 100 kph (65 mph). From 4HLc to 4H at any speed.
  • 4LLc mode - Permanent all wheel drive, fixed 50/50 torque distribution (via locked center differential) with 1.9:1 low gear (Pinin - 1,548:1). Full stop required to switch to 4LLc and back.

So some clarification needed re. different types of Super Selects and couplings.
Pajero Mini (660cc from 2012), says Super Select 4x4 (also has LSD rear diff). But only offers 2H, 4H and 4L modes (i.e. no centre diff locking mode).
I assume (from Softroader's comment above--in reply to Dorin re. Pajero Pinin) it has viscous coupling centre diff.
QUESTION: can I still drive in 4H on tarmac all or most of the time without fear of windup?

The description for Mitsubishi Super Select above says "33%/67% torque distribution front/rear in normal conditions" but the second image shows a bevel gear differential which - to my knowledge - cannot distribute torque unequally. An epicyclic differential could or a few other kinds of spur differentials can but I'm pretty sure a bevel gear differential is always equal torque at both outputs.

I would use my L200 which have superselect in 4L without LC do you think it's possible ? It dosent do it normally but i want ti know if i can make some change on the superselect to do it.

Super select on Pajero 3.2 DiD. I have no indication on instr panel. Cannot select 4x4, stays in 2H. Fuses, connectors and vacuum lines OK. On my scanner I can see when 2H and 4H is selected but nothing for 4HLc and 4LLc. 2x Faults on my scanner: 33 T/F posision sw 2 and 31 Selection sw (eraseable).
Any help will be highly appreciated!

Pajero super select.4x4. I have no lights on instr panel and cannot select 4x4. All fuses and vacuum lines and connector are intact. Any help will be appreciated.

The Pinin system have 50/50 toque split in 4H mode. It have the Super Select SS4i. I have one.

I have a 2001 shogun 3.2 DiD with the auto box. yesturday in the snow i tried to put it in to 4h by puting the auto box in to n and pushing down the lever on the selector lever and moving to the 4h position but only the rear wheels were turning I tried 4hlc and 4 llc also still the same result just the rear wheels spinning. Am I selecting it wrong ? or is there a fault with the car ?

Yes, to engage 4H, or 4HLc, you need to be in Drive and moving forward. It doesn't have to be much speed (less than 10mph/16kph is fine but can be at speeds up to 65mph/100kph). It needs the tires to rotate to engage the system. You only need to stop to enter 4LLc, as well as be in Neutral. I used to have a '95 Montero SR (USA name for the Pajero/Shogun) with the same system.

Mitsubishi have developed several different versions of "Super Select" over the years. Some versions used a bevel gear center diff, some versions used a planetary gear center diff, some had a viscous coupling unit, others had a hydraulic coupling unit. This article has mixed several different "Super Select" versions together. The reference to a 33/67% torque split is from the planetary center diff version of "Super Select" which was termed SS4-i.

Super Select 4WD, Super Select - II and Super Select SS4-i are 3 different versions which all have different mechanical characteristics.

How do I turn off diff lock & 2H and use normal auto?

I don't see the central diff in the lower set of drawings.Do all Pajero have central diff or some have just visco coupling? If they all have then it looks like they covered all driving
conditions brilliantly.
